Mission Canyon Planning Area
Mission
Canyon is an unincorporated portion of Southern Santa Barbara County and
is under the jurisdiction of County government. In 1984, a Specific Plan
was prepared jointly with the City of Santa Barbara as a growth management
tool and is one of the several components which make up the planning process
in many jurisdictions, including the County of Santa Barbara.
In 2006, an update to the 1984 Specific Plan was initiated by the Board of Supervisors. As work progressed, it became clear that the appropriate planning vehicle to address the issues identified in the Work Program is a Community Plan rather than updated Specific Plan. The Community Plan must be jointly adopted by the County and City of Santa Barbara.
The planning area for the Mission Canyon Community Plan is approximately 1,178 acres located in the lower foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, immediately northerly of and contiguous to the City of Santa Barbara. The land uses are almost exclusively that of single family residential with the exception of the Santa Barbara Woman's Club, Rocky Nook County Park, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and County Fire Station 15.
