Summerland Area
The
Summerland Planning Area is located on the South Coast between the communities
of Santa Barbara and Carpinteria and includes the community of Summerland. The planning area is bordered by Ortega Ridge Road on the west, East Valley Road to the north, Greenwell Avenue on the east, and the Pacific
Ocean on the south. Summerland was originally subdivided in 1888 as a spiritualist
community. In 1898, Summerland was the first place in the world
to have an offshore oil well. Remnants of Summerland’s past
may still be seen in its beaches and inland areas.
